What is it?

Mouth guards are used to prevent sporting related dental trauma. It is recommended that all school age children and adults have a mouth guard fitted before commencing their chosen sport. This is particularly important with contact sports. A mouth guard is often an inexpensive way to ensure that no further treatment is needed as a result of sporting related injuries which can be expensive and painful.

What’s involved?

When considering a mouth guard there are two options; store bought or custom fitted. Store bought mouth guards are inexpensive and can be fitted at home but do not offer the best protection and can be uncomfortable if not properly fitted. Professional custom mouth guards however provide superior protection against potential injury during contact sports such as football. They are designed and manufactured in a dentist’s office and laboratory based on your dentist’s expert instructions. An impression and mould will be taken of your teeth and then manufactured into the final product. Because of the extra steps, professional mouth guards are slightly more expensive however provide much more reliable protection and are much more comfortable than generic mouth guards. An effective mouth guard should be durable, comfortable, resisted tears, and easy to clean. They should also not impede breathing, which is a common complaint with store bought guards.

How does it feel?

Fitting a mouth guard shouldn’t be painful although it could protect against future injuries and the pain associated with them. It is important to keep up regular dentist appointments especially if contact sports are played regularly to ensure that trauma is not being caused to the mouth. This should also not cause discomfort given there are no underlying issues.
