A root canal treatment is the removal of damaged tissue inside of the tooth and its root. It is a permanent solution to decay into the nerve of a tooth or an abscess (infection in or around the root of a tooth), which is then filled to protect the rest of the tooth. When a dental root canal treatment is performed it is usually concerned with removing the pulp of the tooth, the innermost layer of the tooth, which can be harmed by decay or gum disease. Once an ‘adult tooth’ has fully come through it doesn’t need the pulp to function therefore this treatment is a great solution for severe decay. This treatment is performed to prevent the need for full extraction.
Root canal treatments have a bad reputation however if performed correctly by the dentists at Forum Dental Centre Belmont it shouldn’t cause you much discomfort. When assessing your teeth a thorough examination of your oral health will be carried out and the best course of treatment will be outlined for you. Once a root canal treatment is decided upon, you will return for another appointment to receive it. You will be fully numbed and it shouldn’t hurt, our dentists will check in with you during the treatment to ensure this is the case. Once you are comfortable and the tooth is prepared with a dental drill will be used to open up the tooth and clear out the damaged pulp and nerves. We then use very strong yet flexible Nickel-Titanium files to shape canals with varying degrees of curvature and thoroughly clean out as much of the bacteria as we can. After the root canal treatment has been performed the opening will be filled. You may need subsequent appointments after this to ensure the tooth and filling is holding up well.
As with all invasive dentistry treatments we aim to create the least painful experience possible. We will use the relevant anesthetic to ensure you experience no pain during the treatment and will aid you with pain relief after the treatment as well.
