Tooth extraction is the process of removing a damaged tooth from a patients mouth. In this case the whole tooth is extracted and can either be replaced with dentures or false teeth or left as is providing the tooth heals well. Tooth extraction can take place for many reasons including extreme tooth damage from decay or trauma that is unable to be treated or a tooth with a serious infection. Overcrowding of the mouth is also a reason for tooth extraction and can help prevent further damage. Removing teeth because the mouth is overcrowded can also be to prepare for braces or other orthodontic treatment and is common with wisdom teeth. Although adult teeth are designed to last a lifetime sometimes other arrangements need to be made. The dentists at Forum Dental are highly skilled and experienced allowing them to recommend the best course of treatment for your particular concern. We do our upmost to keep you comfortable throughout any and all procedures so you can be sure you’re getting the dental care you need to maintain good oral health.
As with all of our dental treatments we start with a consultation. Here we will generally examine your overall oral health and clean your teeth. If we see something that needs addressing we will discuss your treatment options going forward so you are fully educated on what to expect. Once deciding on tooth extraction as the best means for treatment you will return to the dentistry and be given anesthetic to numb the area where the tooth is being extracted. If you are having extensive dental work or more than one tooth removed you may be administered general anesthetic (such would be the case for wisdom tooth removal). The dentist will then remove your tooth by freeing it from the gum, if the tooth is fragile it may have to be removed in pieces otherwise the tooth will be removed smoothly. Next the dentists will likely pack gauze into the socket to stop any bleeding and place a few stitches in the mouth if needed to lose to gum edges over the extraction sight.
As with all invasive dentistry treatments we aim to create the least painful experience possible. We will use the relevant anesthetic to ensure you experience no pain during the treatment and will aid you with pain relief after the treatment as well. Whether you are getting your wisdom teeth removed or are starting fresh with a smile makeover, we’ll ensure that your experience is as pleasant as possible. After the extraction we strongly recommend following your aftercare plan, which may include some type of painkiller and relaxed activity for at least 24hrs after the procedure. You can still brush your teeth however it is important to avoid the extraction area. Our dentists will make sure you are equipped with all the knowledge needed for successful aftercare and our friendly team will be available to answer any questions as needed.
